RANT: to talk in a noisy, excited, or declamatory manner (Marian Webster Dictionary)
There are only a few topics I am capable of ranting about and erectile dysfunction is one of them, surprisingly. There are perhaps few doctors as passionate as I am about the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Male health is often overlooked or touched on too briefly for many men. I know this because I’ve heard it from hundreds of patients.
For many men, the ability to get an erection is the defining characteristic of who they are as a man. Thus, the loss of your erections or any difficulty maintaining your erections can make you feel like less of a man and is probably coincides with many cases of mild depression.
Perhaps your doctor will prescribe the blue pill or a similar form of it and if you are lucky it will work for a few years. Many men notice it being less helpful as time goes on. This is because you had low testosterone and then your doctor might have added a medications for hypertension, further aggravating the situation. As we age our penises can shrink and become fatty pieces of meat that no longer serve their intended purpose other than allowing us to stand peeing. This is partly due to low testosterone and inactivity.
Ironically, if your doctor puts you on an anti-depressant or some other psych med your libido will often decrease so you become much more apathetic about the whole situation. Unfortunately, the causes of your original problem, erectile dysfunction due to low testosterone, etc., have not been addressed.
The research shows the more sex you have the longer you live. Social stigmas around sex prevent us from getting treatment. The longer you delay treatment the more inactive you become and inactivity can lead to inability. Even prostate cancer patients after treatment are told to become active again as soon as possible, even if their erections are poor. The goal with treatments at our clinic is always to help you get improved results with time. Many guys notice that not only are they getting better erections but they are also enjoying the sex they are having more and their partners likely are as well.
Treatments currently available for erectile dysfunction:
- Lifestyle counseling
- Holistic approaches (too many to list)
- Oral medications (sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil, cabergolamine)
- Sublingual medications (sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil, apomorphine)
- Topical medications (alprostadil)
- Intra-urethral medications (alprostadil)
- Intra-cavernosal medications (monotherapy, bimix, trimix)
- Mechanical devices (pumps, rings)
- Prosthetic implants (surgery required)
How many of the above treatments has your doctor offered you?
We are always looking for the cause of your problem and that is when holistic approaches to medicine can be very helpful. For example, alpha blockers are often used to treat urinary problems related to an enlarged prostate but these medications cause erectile dysfunction and there are other treatments that can be effective at reducing the size of the prostate and enhancing sexual function!
My personal story can help explain why I’m so passionate about treating erectile dysfunction. I suffered for years with low testosterone and problems with the firmness of my erections. As you can imagine, this caused many problems with my relationships. The erectile dysfunction made things difficult with women sometimes and this was made worse by my low mood and confidence (other symptoms of low testosterone).
I suffered like this most of my adult life until a few years ago when I was working in a laboratory that does a lot of hormone testing and had my testosterone levels checked. Some might say my levels were “pathetic”. For me, it was a big eye opener. Finally, after years of lab testing I had found something that made sense. Without going into too much detail lets just say now I feel much better and am ready to live life to the fullest. By treating the cause of my problems I feel like the future is looking much brighter and life is getting better instead of worse.
I feel many men can have hope again. It is rare that I am unable to find an effective treatment for a patient since there are so many options. The first step is coming up with the courage to give me a call. From there on it is smooth sailing.
